Diabetes

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when your body doesn’t make insulin or doesn’t use insulin correctly to convert your blood sugar into energy. There are three common types of diabetes:

Type 1

Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes, occurs when your pancreas doesn’t produce insulin. Only around 5% of people who have diabetes have Type 1 diabetes. It’s usually diagnosed during childhood, although it can emerge at any age. Medical researchers believe Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune condition that destroys the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas.

Type 2

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and is present when your body doesn’t use insulin correctly. It usually develops in adulthood, although it’s becoming more common in children. While genetic factors contribute to your risk of Type 2 diabetes, eating a poor diet and leading a sedentary lifestyle also contribute to the disease.

Gestational diabetes

Some women develop gestational diabetes in the second trimester of pregnancy. The placenta produces a hormone that interferes with insulin conversion. Gestational diabetes usually goes away soon after your baby is born, although it can increase your risk of developing diabetes in the future.

What are the signs of diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes usually develops suddenly, causing symptoms such as:

  • Increased thirst and hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Blurry vision

Type 2 diabetes symptoms develop gradually, and you may not know that you have prediabetes or diabetes right away. When left untreated, Type 2 diabetes eventually causes similar symptoms to Type 1 diabetes.

What tests diagnose diabetes?

The team at Russak Personalized Medicine use blood and urine tests to identify diabetes. They provide comprehensive blood panels as part of your annual executive physical. Diabetes can lead to dangerous complications such as neuropathy, foot ulcers, and blindness, so it’s critical to have routine screening to diagnose the condition as early as possible.

What methods manage diabetes?

At Russak Personalized Medicine, the team offers customized diabetes management plans. If you have prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes, you may be able to regulate your blood sugar levels with changes to your diet and exercise habits.

However, if you have Type 1 diabetes or more advanced Type 2 diabetes, your doctor also prescribes insulin to ensure your body has the hormones it needs to function correctly.
