Thyroid

What does my thyroid do?

Your thyroid is a small gland located at the front of your throat, just below your Adam’s apple. It produces hormones that control many critical body functions such as your metabolism, heart rate, and digestive system.

Unfortunately, many issues can interfere with your thyroid function, including:

  • Hashimoto’s disease
  • Thyroiditis
  • Grave’s disease
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Tumors

Thyroid dysfunction causes either hyper- or hypoactivity. Whether you have too many or too few thyroid hormones, the imbalance can severely impact your health and quality of life.

What are the signs of thyroid dysfunction?

Thyroid hyperactivity and hypoactivity cause different symptoms.

Signs of thyroid hyperactivity include:

  • Unintended weight loss
  • Insomnia and other sleep disruptions
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Muscle weakness and tremors
  • Infrequent, light periods
  • Vision disturbances
  • Heat sensitivity

However, common hypoactive thyroid symptoms include:

  • Weight gain or trouble losing weight
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent, heavy periods
  • Dry hair and skin
  • Intolerance to cold temperatures

If you have any of these symptoms and a family history of thyroid problems, contact Russak Personalized Medicine for thyroid assessment today.

What tests measure thyroid function?

The team at Russak Personalized Medicine provides specialized thyroid function testing. In addition to measuring your triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels, they also assess your free T3 and reverse T3 levels and provide specific Hashimoto’s testing. Your provider may also check your pituitary gland function, as your pituitary gland produces thyroid-stimulating hormones.

In addition to your blood tests, the team also offers consultations to discuss your symptoms, overall health, and personal and family medical history. Your provider may also recommend additional testing to rule out other conditions that could contribute to your symptoms.

What factors determine the best treatment for thyroid disease?

Treatment for thyroid disease depends on whether you are hyperactive or hypoactive, and the severity of your condition.

If you are hypoactive, your provider can prescribe replacement thyroid hormones to restore your hormonal balance and wellness. They also provide lifestyle advice to help you manage your health.

Treatment for hyperactive thyroid problems is slightly more complicated as your provider needs to reduce the amount of hormones your thyroid produces. They may prescribe medication to block hormone production or suggest radioactive iodine therapy to destroy part or all of your thyroid.
